Our English curriculum is ambitious in fulfilling the national curriculum and promotes high standards of language and literacy. We aim to our equip pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word and develop their love of reading through our carefully planned approach so that they can flourish as learners.We ensure that all pupils:
- read easily, fluently and with good understanding. Our use of the Little Wandle programme ensures that children have a strong grasp of phonics and use these to help them read independently by the end of Key Stage 1.
- develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information, so that they experience a wide range of genres and texts and use their reading skills to support their learning throughout the curriculum in Key Stage 2.
- benefit from whole class reading lessons, following our INSPiRED approach, which focus upon the development of decoding and retrieval skills alongside their understanding of the texts.
- have the opportunity to engage with the Accelerated Reader programme from Year 2, which enhances reading engagement and progression.
- acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language.
- use their experience of reading to support their development in writing. We use the Talk for Writing approach to support the teaching of writing, and expect our children to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.
- use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to collaborate, elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas.
- are competent in speaking and listening, making formal presentations and participating in debate opportunities. Our Talk for Writing approach, which is introduced from the nursery, provides a good springboard to support this.
