Willow Class Delves into Superworms, Ladybirds, and the Wonders of Creation!
This week in Willow Class, learning has been an exciting adventure filled with wriggling worms, bad-tempered ladybirds, and the power of creativity! Our focus has spanned across literacy, mathematics, religious education, and art and design, providing a rich and varied educational experience.
Superworm Adventures and the Art of Drawing
In literacy, we’ve been captivated by the story of "Superworm," a tale brimming with adventure and powerful vocabulary.
We've expanded our language skills by learning words like "transform," "indestructible," "calamity," "superhuman," "heroic," "wriggling," "zooming," and "courageous." These words have helped us truly understand the exciting journey of our heroic superworm! To bring the story to life, we’ve even set up our own worm farm! We also took inspiration from the book "I Can Only Draw Worms" and had a go at drawing our own.
We focused on our pencil control and the different types of lines we could use to create effective representations of these fascinating creatures. It was amazing to see the variety of worms created!
Counting Ladybirds and Composing Numbers
Our mathematical exploration took a slightly grumpier turn as we looked at "The Bad Tempered Ladybird." Inspired by the book we have been exploring the composition of five. We used counters to partition different ways to make “five” on each ladybird wing. While discovering multiple ways of creating five, we also emphasized that each one is always part of the whole of five. This hands-on activity helped us understand that five can be made up in many different ways while still being the same total number.
Gratitude and Creation
In our Religious Education lesson, we have continued to delve into the story of creation. We explored what the world is made of and took the opportunity to create our own prayers expressing gratitude for the many gifts God has given us. These heartfelt prayers allowed us to reflect on the natural world and all the wonder it holds.
Building and Joining: A Hands-On Approach to Art and Design
Our creative juices really flowed in our art and design session as we explored different joining methods in our junk modelling activities. We investigated different approaches. We discovered how to use a hole punch and split pins for creating a moving joint, learning to cut tubes and boxes to make a flange joint for 3D constructions, and investigating which types of glue were the best for permanent joins. It was wonderful to see how creative the children were while exploring and developing these new skills!
Overall, it’s been another fantastic week of learning and discovery in Willow Class. We look forward to continuing our adventures next week!
