Hazel Class

Welcome to the Hazel Class!

Welcome to Hazel Class!
Hazel Class is a mixed Year 3 and Year 4 class. During their time in Lower Key Stage 2, children make the transition towards more independent and increasingly formal learning. Our Year 4 pupils have the valuable opportunity to act as positive role models, while all children are encouraged to grow in confidence, maturity and independence.
In Hazel Class, we aim to create a welcoming and supportive environment where every child feels inspired to learn. Lessons include practical activities, purposeful use of technology and opportunities to apply knowledge in meaningful contexts. In Maths, children will develop secure understanding, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. In English, they will become confident readers, speakers and writers, learning to communicate their ideas clearly and creatively. We will also continue to develop accurate spelling and fluent, joined handwriting.
We value curiosity, resilience and collaboration. Children will be encouraged to ask questions, learn from mistakes, celebrate one another’s achievements and take pride in everything they do.
Supporting learning at home
Please support your child by encouraging them to read at least five times each week for approximately 20 minutes. Regular reading makes an enormous difference to children’s fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Children can complete their Accelerated Reader quizzes at home and change their books once they have completed the relevant quiz.
Times tables are also an important part of learning in Lower Key Stage 2 and will be practised regularly in school. Year 3 children will consolidate their 2, 5 and 10 times tables before developing fluency in the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Year 4 children will work towards confidently recalling all multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12 in preparation for the Multiplication Tables Check in the summer term. Regular, short practice at home will greatly support their confidence and progress.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office to arrange an appointment. We look forward to working in partnership with you and sharing a happy, successful year in Hazel Class.
